Differential Scanning Calorimeters

The ability to disperse particles to obtain a homogeneous product is of great interest as it influences the behaviours of the product. Dispersibility defines the ability of the particles to be spatially well distributed in terms of size and concentration in a liquid to achieve the desired size. The dispersibility ratio can be calculated from the Turbiscan’s measured data to assess the effectiveness of mechanical dispersion and/or surfactant performance on a given suspension.

There are many instruments that can be used to measure the particle size distribution of emulsions. Most techniques require the sample to be dispersed or diluted in a solvent, such as water. Turbiscan is the only instrument that allows particle size measurement in the sample’s native state without dilution. Formulators can observe for particle size changes in concentrated regime/media over time.

Colloidal stability analysis and shelf life determination are key criteria in formulation studies of emulsions, suspensions and foams. Turbiscan is the first patented technology to analyse destabilisation mechanisms in concentrated dispersed media and thus the only to offer accelerated aging tests on the actual unstressed products. Creaming, sedimentation, agglomeration, aggregation, and coalescence of highly concentrated formulations are detected at a very early stage and monitored over time. Formulators can study the speed of destabilisation and compare the difference in stability of various formulations through the use of the Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI).

In many applications, product destabilisation is unavoidable and redispersion of product will be required prior to usage/consumption. The Turbiscan can address concerns over the suitability and effectiveness of various redispersion techniques (stirring, sonication, shaking etc) and determine whether the operating parameters are sufficient for the product to regain back its initial homogeneous state.
